INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this training is to equip mechanical engineers with the knowledge and skills necessary to inspect trailers and semi-trailers in accordance with SASO 2910/2022 and related standards. This program combines theoretical understanding and practical application to ensure inspectors can assess trailer safety, structural integrity, and regulatory compliance.
SCOPE:
This training applies to the inspection of all types of trailers and semi-trailers (Category O1 to O4) intended for road circulation within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The training covers inspection planning, visual and dimensional checks, functional testing, and certification requirements. Military or non-road trailers are excluded from this scope.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INSPECTOR:
- The trailer inspector shall be responsible for:
- Reviewing inspection history, previous reports, and technical documents.
- Conducting visual inspections of structural and safety components.
- Performing dimensional verification against standards and manufacturer data.
- Checking documentation such as VIN, compliance plates, and test certificates.
- Performing or witnessing functional tests such as suspension, maneuverability, and lighting systems.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable SASO and ISO standards.
- Reporting defects or non-conformities, and preparing complete inspection reports.
- Recommending NDT or rework if structural issues are suspected.
FUNDAMENTALS OF A TRAILER & SEMI-TRAILER INSPECTOR
A qualified inspector must understand the following fundamentals:
- Trailer Classification: Knowledge of types (drawbar, semi-trailer), categories (O1 to O4), and intended use.
- Regulations & Standards: Familiarity with SASO 2910/2022, ISO standards, and manufacturer specifications.
- Safety & Risk Awareness: Understanding potential hazards at inspection sites and implementing safety measures.
- Inspection Tools: Proper use and calibration of measuring instruments (e.g., tape, calipers, multimeter, UT gauge).
- Documentation Handling: Ability to validate and interpret VIN, test reports, certificates, and specification sheets.
VISUAL INSPECTION
Inspectors must conduct a thorough visual check to identify:
- Corrosion, deformation, and cracks on the body and frame.
- Wear or damage to tires, rims, suspension, and braking components.
- Missing, damaged, or loose bolts, guards, couplers, chains, and mud flaps.
- Electrical system issues: damaged wires, broken lights, faulty connections.
- Proper labeling, markings, and VIN compliance.
Note: Any crack, fatigue, or weld defect must be recommended for NDT.
DIMENSIONAL VERIFICATION
All trailers and semi-trailers must conform to dimensional standards:
- Maximum Length: 18m (semi-trailer), 20m (trailer), 23m (vehicle carriers)
- Maximum Width: 2.6m
- Maximum Height: 4.2m
- RUPD height from ground: Max 550 mm
- RUPD cross member section height: Min 100 mm
- Kingpin size verification (2″ or 3.5″)
- Tire marking, construction, size, and load rating
- Axle spacing measurement for weight calculation
FUNCTIONAL TESTS
Inspectors must validate the following functional performance:
- Suspension Test: Confirm durability and alignment per certified test reports (ISO/IEC 17025 compliant).
- Tire Test: Validate performance (grip, speed, temperature, strength) based on ECE 117 standards.
- Maneuverability Test: Ensure vehicle can rotate 360° within defined radius limits without exceeding boundary.
- Lighting Test: All lights (tail, brake, reverse, fog, indicators) must function properly.
- Stability Test: For tipper trailers, confirm no overturn during unloading at full extension.
